STATEMENT BY MONICA PINEDA, PRESIDENT, AND MARICARMEN GARCIA, VICE-PRESIDENT OF GENTE POR LA DEFENSA ANIMAL (PEOPLE FOR THE DEFENSE OF ANIMALS), BASED IN MEXICO CITY.
Our main area of work is of Wildlife Abuse Cases. In Mexico there is an overwhelming amount of captive wildlife cruelty cases. The lion Kobu is the most representative case showing the low animal welfare standards and lack of law enforcement in Mexico. Kobu lived in a cage in a Primary School and was fed with live stray dogs. It took us two years to recue him and given that there are not Sanctuaries in our country, the best option was to send him to a Sanctuary in the U.S.
Kobu is just one out of thousands of cruelty cases that exist because of poor animal welfare protections; why would you choose to send Jenny to Mexico?
The concern for Jenny's destiny should not focus on Africam, but Mexicos poor animal standards. We recommend that you keep Jenny in the U.S. because Mexico is 80 years behind in animal welfare standards compared to your country. There are no animal control officers; there are serious legal loopholes on wildlife welfare laws, and poor enforcerment of regulations in Mexico which is the responsibility of the Mexican Government. This affects zoos as well.
Jenny's case is a call for reflection by the United States and Mexico. Mexico must seriously rethink the way in which historically it has treated animals, and the City of Dallas must do what is in Jennys best interest, and that is to send her to The Elephant Santuary in Tennesse to let Jenny live in peace for the last years of her life.
We love our country and are proud of it but the fact is animals are not well protected in Mexico, so we must recommend keeping Jenny in the United States.

Siempre estoy pensando en formas para involucrar a la gente en la protección animal.
Los mecanismos de cada quien son bien distintos y a veces impredecibles. Hay quienes se enganchan con la tragedia, otros se niegan a verla y sólo reaccionan ante imágenes de felicidad perfecta.
Incluso con la inquietud de ayudar, este hecho depende de la satisfacción del involucrado y no del animal afectado. Es decir, el hecho que motive a la generosidad debe ir diseñado custom, a la medida de acuerdo al receptor.
No me quejo, sea como sea, estoy dispuesta a intentarlo una y otra vez con tal de ayudar a un animal, es sólo que a veces desearía que los humanos fuéramos menos reticentes y por qué no decirlo, huevones. Estamos rodeados de huevones emocionales que se niegan a exponer un tantito de sus intereses, emociones o comodidades en pos de alguien más, mucho menos de un animal que no es de su misma especie.
Y hablando de la generosidad custom, nada más representativo que Gala, la leona que rescaté junto con mi organización, GEPDA. Me ha sorprendido el repentino interés de mucha gente, ahora resulta que todos son amantes de los animales. Ja! Y yo partiéndome para conseguirles casa, aunque sea temporal, a tantísimos perros sarnosos y callejeros! ¡De haberlo sabido! Les hubiera llamado a todos los que ahora se mueren por ver, tocar y estar con Gala. ¿Y si ella hubiera sido una vívora, un perro mugroso y flaco, un gato feral? ¿Habrían estado ahí para ella?
En fin, espero que Gala deje en todos los que la han tenido cerca, una semilla que trascienda y que ayude a otros animales. No tenemos que esperar la gran y espectacular oportunidad de rescatar un león para hacer algo que valga la pena.
